Control – Joy Division Ian Curtis Biopic

This movie about Joy Division and its frontman Ian Curtis earned raves at both Cannes and Edinburg film festivals. Check out the captivating trailer on the official site. Also directed by well established music photographer and videographer Anton Corbijn (U2, Metallica, Depeche Mode) .  I actually went to see this movie at DC’s E Street Cinema and had a debacle occur.  We went to go see the 10 p.m. show, and it turned out during the 7 p.m. show the film snapped and broke in the projector. Needless to say I was crushed as the film looks amazing and Joy Division is one of my all-time favorite bands.  My friend Seth also alerted me to a cover track by the Killers that provide an, er, killer version of Shadowplay. As soon as I get the mp3 I’ll put it up here.  I listened to it the other day and it is terrific.

Synopsis from IMDb:
Control is the biography of Joy Division lead singer Ian Curtis, taking his story from schoolboy days of 1973 to his suicide on the eve of the band’s first American tour in 1980.

In this time we see Curtis grow from David Bowie-infatuated teen to Sex Pistols-inspired punk, and eventually to rising new wave star.

The movie explores the pressures he felt, from his epilepsy, a failing marriage, his new lover, and a band that relied on him – all in an attempt to explain his decision to hang himself at the age of 23.

The movie is based on Deborah Curtis’s biography “Touching from a Distance” .
